Forecast for campaign's final weeks? Lock and load

A check of campaign finance reports shows several candidates have stashed a few dollars for a final blitz in the closing weeks of Campaign 2008. Check the "net balance on hand" section of the candidate financial reports for a look at how much was set aside for the final weeks as of Sept. 30.

-House District 13: While Katie Dempsey has five times the contributions Bob Puckett has collected, the Democrat challenger had about $5,000 more in the bank than the first-term Rome Republican. Dempsey has a fund-raiser today featuring U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson. As of Sept. 30, the House 13 candidates had nearly $60,000 to spend--and spend it they will.

-District attorney's race: Incumbent Democrat Leigh Patterson and Republican challenger Dan Morgan are signing checks almost as fast as they take them in. Morgan had $8,000 in hand vs. $1,500 for Patterson. That was before weekend fund-raising efforts, however.

-House District 11: Republican challenger Betty Brady ran her account down to $46 as of Sept. 30. Democratic incumbent Barbara Massey Reece had $21,192 on hand as of the filing date.

-House District 16:  Democratic incumbent Rick Crawford is armed with $24,379 in the bank as of the report deadline vs. $1,351 for Republican challenger Bob Culver. They meet in a forum next Tuesday in Cedartown> Polk Headlines

-So where will those last-minute dollars go? Direct mail, yard signs, radio, Web sites and newspapers--and maybe even some social media efforts, too.
