The 2008 Vote: Incredible early voting trend picks up steam
-Floyd County: Another 1,757 people voted at the Rome Civic Center and county administration building on Wednesday, boosting the early vote total since Sept. 22 to 14,218. That's nearly 32 percent of the registered voters in Floyd County. Even larger crowds are possible today and Friday as advance voting comes to a close.
-In Bartow County, 14,285 people have voted in advance with another 2,453 ballots-by-mail requested as well.
-Gordon County: 699 people voted Wednesday, boosting turnout total to 6,740.
What to expect on Election Day, the vote count afterward:
-Election Day is going to be a busy and long one, says Pete McDonald, chair of the Floyd County Board of Elections and Registration, in a note to area media.
-42,000 of Floyd's 44,885 voters (more than 93 percent) could turn out, he says. It is possible precincts will be in service until 8 p.m. (those in line at 7 p.m. will get a chance to vote). McDonald hopes everything is back at the elections office by 8:30 p.m. with results--including early voting--tallied by 11 p.m.
>Some issues to remember include:
-The "counting" of more than 3,000 absentee ballots mailed to Floyd voters (that's in addition early/advance voting). That will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday and could last two hours.
-Tallying provisional votes. "Any voter who does not appear on the Secretary of State's Registered Voter List or does not have one of the forms of proper photo identification will be asked to complete a Provisional Ballot. This will allow the Elections Office to investigate the status of the voter and if the voter is registered to vote in Floyd County the vote will be counted. A voter who in not able to present an acceptable form of photo identification at the precinct location and completes a Provisional Ballot has 48 hours to come to the Elections Office and present their photo identification."
-Results released Tuesday night will be unofficial. The elections office will have until Friday to count ballots mailed by military and the provisional ballots.
