More Northwest Georgia layoffs on the way?

>Shaw is closing a plant in Trenton, a move that will idle 444 employees, and statements attributed to the company on Thursday indicated more cuts are on the way, mostly in Northwest Georgia. (Channel 9). Counting Trenton's upcoming cuts, 14 "major" layoffs since Jan. 1 have cost the area 2,016 jobs, according to Georgia Department of Labor reports (see chart below)

>Upcoming employment opportunities:

-Goody's store in Rome is interviewing seasonal help from 3 to 6 this afternoon.

-The new Tractor Supply Store at U.S. 411 and Peeples Valley near Cartersville is opening in January. A job fair set for Nov. 5-6 at the Cartersville Career Center, 19 Felton Place, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

AJC/Synovus seeks $900 in federal bailout program: The parent company of Citizens First of  Rome and Georgia Bank & Trust in Calhoun and Cartersville has applied for $900 million to "shore up its balance sheet." >AJC

Key step forward for 411 Connector: The Federal Highway Administration has OK'd the Record of Decision for the proposed "411 Connector,"   moving the long-delayed project closer to onstruction than any ever before. It allows the Georgia Department of Transportation to begin exploring financing options for the highway connecting U.S. 411/41 to Interstate 75. While $25 million already is secured to get the project started, the key issue will be future funding--especially since the state DOT has frozen this and 10 other major projects around the state because of budget problems> Connector

Final day to vote in advance of Tuesday's election:

This is your last chance to vote early in Tuesday's general election. More than 40,000 people have done so already in Floyd, Bartow, Gordon and Polk counties--and a large turnout is forecast today.

-Floyd County: Another 1,807 people voted at the Rome Civic Center and county administration building on Thursday, boosting the early vote total since Sept. 22 to 16,025. That's nearly 36 percent of the registered voters in Floyd County.

-Bartow County: 16,086 people have votedin advance; 1,801 on Thursday.

-Gordon County: 797 people voted Thursday, boosting turnout total to 7,537.
