Georgia's last employment snapshot before election day was bleaker than the month before. The unemployment rate in Northwest Georgia in September was at least two full points higher than the same month in 2007, state Department of Labor reports show. Nearly 11,300 people were out of work in Floyd, Gordon, Bartow, Polk and Chattooga counties last month while another 146,000 held jobs.

The largest increase in unemployment was in Gordon County, from 4.5 percent in September 2007 to 7.7% last month. Compared to August reports, most local counties saw small to moderate increases.

Statewide, 6.5 percent of the work force was idle in September vs. 4.5 percent a year earlier. Last month's rate was the highest in nearly 16 years. Job losses came across-the-board in manufacturing, construction, trade and services.

>Temple-Inland closing box plant, idling 91 workers, RNT reports (Click)

-If true, it will be the fourth major layoff in Rome/Floyd this year, following Wheeler's collapse at the start of the year and Mohawk's decision in February to close the Armuchee plant. Several smaller layoffs also have occurred in the market. Temple-Inland is scheduled to release third-quarter financial reports on Oct. 28.
