Floyd County's jobless rate was at its highest level in at least 13 months in July. Some 7.2 percent of the labor force here was idle last month, up from 6.3 percent in June and 5.0 percent a year earlier. In all, 3,686 people were without jobs last month while another 47,284 were employed. >In the region (chart below): Bartow, Gordon, Polk counties also reported jumps in individual unemployment rates while Chattooga saw a drop (9.5 to 9.1 percent).

>Statewide, the jobless rate rose from 6.0 percent in June to 6.5 percent in July, the highest in 15 years. Said State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond: "The surge of jobless workers into our career centers is challenging our ability to keep pace with the demand for assistance at a time when it is most needed. We ask our customers for their patience and cooperation as we work together to meet and overcome these economic challenges."
