The latest Census population estimates are out, keyed to July 1, 2007, and the numbers show few surprises. Most of the fastest growth areas are along the I-75 corridor--Calhoun, Cartersville and Emerson. The city of Rome shrank by 61 people, slipping to an estimated population of 36,463. Storm forces CVTC to cancel Polk classes until Monday: The Polk County Campus of Coosa Valley Technical College is suspending classes until Monday because of electrical/power issues triggered by Wednesday night's storms. Classes will resume Monday. For more, click CVTC

First-time jobless claims drop 31.1 percent in Rome: Preliminary reports from the state Department of Labor show 525 people sought first-time unemployment insurance benefits in June vs. 762 a year earlier. Statewide, 45,553 laid-off workers filed for assistance last month, a 35.9 percent increase over the same period a year ago. The May-to-June increase was 1.9 percent. Says a state release: "Most of the increase came in trade and services. Initial claims are considered to be a good barometer of economic activity."
