>Gingrey campaign account nears $1.33 million: The latest campaign finance reports for the federal candidates shows U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey had $1,329,801 in contributions for his re-election bid as of June 30. Just about $1 million of that came from individuals with $295,188 coming from political action committees.

>Battles' defeat of Lewis a threat to Richardson? So reports Dick Pettys, editor of InsiderAdvantage Georgia. Pettys says Paul Battles' win in the House 15 race Tuesday took out Lewis, a "powerful committee chairman." Writes Pettys: The defeat "has the Capitol buzzing about potential opposition from within his own party to Speaker Glenn Richardson. >Greer seeks appointment to Rome school board:

A homecoming could be brewing for a veteran former school board member. Jim Greer has applied for the post left open following the passing Gene Clark. Clark, who was to step down from the board July 1, died suddenly in late June. Greer, who spent 22 years on the board and served as vice chair for 15 years, resigned to run for City Commission last year. Unsuccessful in that bid, he later was appointed to the city board of adjustments and sits on an ad hoc committee studying potential uses for the GE property that is about to be donated to the city> Rome schools

>Bartow, Floyd, Polk counties honored for 'Work Ready' achievements: (Media release) The Governor's Office of Workforce Development has presented 16 Road to Readiness awards since March to counties that have exceeded expectations and beat their individual goals for citizens earning Work Ready Certificates while they are pursuing certified community status. Road to Readiness recipients include: Bartow, Floyd and P olk counties. "We set aggressive goals and have found that Georgia's communities are equal to the challenge," said Debra Lyons, director. "The Road to Readiness award recognizes these communities' extraordinary efforts and encourages them to continue to strive to meet their goals."

>State's jobless rate holds at 5.7% in June: Georgia's Department of Labor reports the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.7 percent from May to June but was up from 4.4 percent in June 2007. The state
lost 21,900 l jobs in manufacturing, construction, trade, and services. Local reports are due within two weeks.

>Licks n Sticks getting some 'play': Friends back from a Tybee Island vacation say the concert set for Ridge Ferry Park on July 26 was getting major play on coastal Georgia radio. Listeners were being offered ticket packages to hear the Marshall  Tucker Band, the Georgia Satellites and others scheduled to the event. >Look for the bat signal just after midnight: A reminder that "The Dark Knight" opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday at the Movies at Mount Berry Square,  Rome Cinemas and the Carmike 12 in Cartersville. The reviews for the second chapter in the Batman movie franchise relaunch have been extremely positive.

Commissioner Mayes Mayes named to state film, music advisory committee: County Commissioner John Mayes, 56, has been named a Local Government Representative to the Georgia Film, Video and Music Advisory Commission by Gov. Sonny Perdue.Mayes is the owner and founder of Pro Systems Clean Care, is a member of the hospital and health boards,  Rome/Floyd Commission on Children and Youth and Rome Rotary.  He is also a member of the Georgia Board of Corrections and is a board member of Citizens First Bank. He and his wife, Terri, have six children.
