Media release: Two high school seniors from Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy came home with medals from the 2012 SkillsUSA competition. The College And Career Academy's SkillsUSA Chapter attended the SkillsUSA State Conference and Competition on March 15 - 17. Twelve students traveled to Atlanta and competed in Photography, Precision Machining Technology, Welding Sculpture, and Computer Maintenance. Rebecca Curtis, a senior at Pepperell High School, won the first place gold medal for state of Georgia Outstanding Student and Jacob Minter, also a senior at Pepperell, took the bronze medal in welding sculpture.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). SkillsUSA serves more than 300,000 students and instructors annually. The organization has 13,000 school chapters in 54 state and territorial associations. More than 14,500 instructors and administrators are professional members of SkillsUSA.
Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy is a career academy charter school in the Floyd County school system serving high school students from Armuchee High, Coosa High, Model High and Pepperell High. The schools goal is to prepare students for their career after high school by bridging the gap to post secondary education and training, providing career experiences and connecting what students learn to the real world. The school offers programs in health care sciences, Cisco Networking, engineering, teaching, graphic communication, construction, horticulture, public safety and more.
