Georgia Highlands College's student newspaper, the Six Mile Post, has returned
from the annual statewide contest sponsored by the Georgia College Press Association in Athens with 15 awards, six for the publication and nine for individual staff members. The honors were announced Saturday, Feb. 2 for work completed during spring and fall semesters 2012.
The SMP won six out of the eight overall awards possible in the two-year college category. They included first-place wins in General Photography, Advertising and Layout and Design. They also took second place for Editorials and Sports and third place for Features. SMP took second place behind Georgia Perimeter College in the General Excellence category. In all, there were more than 2,000 entries in the competitive two- and four-year categories.
Individual staff members also took home honors in various categories, including Andrew West, J.P. Erickson, Ryan Jones, Kevin Horan, Becky Crooks, Kaitlyn Hyde and Scott Hale. Some of these won in more than one category. Sarah Lane, SMP assistant print editor, was elected as a two-year college representative on the GCPA executive board.
Representing the Six Mile Post in Athens were Andrew West, editor; J.P. Erickson, assistant print editor; Sarah Lane, assistant print editor; Becky Crooks, sports editor; Ryan Jones, chief photographer; Neen Snowball, staff writer; and Gayle Golden, staff writer. Kristie Kemper, SMP advisor, Cindy Wheeler, assistant adviser, and Leslie Johnston, Cartersville liaison accompanied the students to Athens. Kemper is a professor of English, while Wheeler is an associate professor and Johnston an instructor of English at GHC.
While in Athens, the students attended the two-day press institute, where they and their advisors attended sessions on the many aspects of print and electronic media and networked with professional journalists.
