Armuchee Middle wins Middle School Quiz Bowl

Media release: Armuchee Middle School is the 2013 Academic Quiz Bowl middle school champions for Floyd County Schools. The Academic Quiz Bowl is a county-wide academic competition that was held on Tuesday, February 12 at Shorter University. Sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade gifted students across the county participated in the Middle School Quiz Bowl. This is the eleventh year students have competed at the middle school level. In the academic competition, middle school students compete in the academic areas of math, literature, vocabulary, science, history, and geography. The quiz bowl began 12 years ago with students at the elementary level competing in the first academic contest.

Armuchee Middle was the overall winner in the Floyd County Schools Kaleidoscope Academic Quiz Bowl competition with 1,320 total points. Model Middle finished a second with 1,265 points, Coosa Middle placed third with 1,245 points and Pepperell Middle was fourth with 1,195. The middle school competition also divides the competitors into grade levels and crowns grade level champions. Along with taking overall honors, Armuchee Middle finished in first place in the sixth-grade division, Model Middle School took the seventh-grade title and Coosa Middle finished first in the eighth-grade competition.

The quiz bowl competitions were started to promote student academic growth in problem solving, critical thinking, communication skills, and advanced research skills. The activities also promote leadership and provide motivation for students to excel in academics. The Quiz Bowls are local school system events with no region or state competitions. Developers of the program sought to provide middle school gifted students with an activity to prepare them to participate in academic competitions at the high school level and also showcase their academic talents. "This is a great event for our gifted students because it exposes them to the college atmosphere through our partnership with Shorter University hosting the event," stated McCall Govignon, director of advanced academic programs for Floyd County Schools.

Armuchee Middle team members include: eighth-grade - Jayme Barrett, Jessica Barrett, Alyssa Brock, Rachel McCurry, Farrin Mumpower, Brian Richey, and Jack Stallins; seventh-grade - Reid Blackmon, Taylor Brock, Griffin Goss, Josiah Hammond, Lucy Harris, Braden Hyde, Alane Rogers, and Britt Smith; sixth-grade - John Finn, Kayla Hutcherson, Zack Mann, Olivia Martin, Nigara Nizamidin, Jarrett Proctor, and Emma Clare Wells.
