Media release: Georgia Highlands College has announced the appointment of Janet G. Alexander as the new dean of Health Sciences. Having worked in nursing since 1979, Alexander comes to GHC from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where she has served as professor of nursing for the past 21 years. Like Highlands, Samford transitioned from an associate degree program to a baccalaureate in 1995.
She currently teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate programs at Samford, and for the past three years has been the director of the accelerated second degree B.S.N. program. A second degree student already holds a bachelor's degree in another subject and is returning to school to earn a second bachelor's in nursing. As coordinator of the nurse educator track in Samford's Master of Science program, she taught and coordinated all nurse educator courses and coordinated educator admissions and progressions. She also evaluated the curriculum, revising it as needed. Before coming to Samford, Alexander served as assistant professor of nursing at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
In 2010 she earned the Recognized Leader award for her international impact on nursing and health care from the University of Alabama School of Nursing as part of its 60th anniversary celebration.
In 2003 she was honored by her peers with the Samford University Georg Macon Memorial Award for outstanding teaching.
She is a Certified Nurse Educator through the National League of Nursing, and is a member of that organization as well as the Alabama State Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association and the Alabama League for Nursing. Alexander holds Doctor of Education in educational leadership and a Specialist in Education from Samford, a Master of Science in nursing and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
"Dr. Alexander took Samford's nursing program from a two-year associate's program to a four-year baccalaureate program, and that experience will be invaluable for us as we go through this process at GHC," said Laura Musselwhite, interim vice president for academic and student affairs. "She brings critical expertise in transforming such a program to meet the demands of the next level. I look forward to working with someone with such strong and capable leadership, who will be able to guide implementation of the new B.S.N. completion program, while continuing to highlight the successes of our existing two-year programs in dental hygiene and nursing."
Alexander begins her duties in January 2013.
