Nearly 300 pets treated at Saturday's rabies vaccination clinic

Media release:  With Floyd County experiencing a recent uptick in confirmed animal rabies cases, eight so far this year, local pet owners took advantage of the special low fee and the convenience of a Saturday afternoon visit to the Floyd County Health Department to get their dog or cat a rabies vaccination, the single best precaution against getting rabies. "We  gave 294 rabies vaccinations at our clinic last Saturday," said Floyd County Health Department Environmental Health Manager, Mike Pitts, adding "our veterinarian partners who generously volunteered their time actually administered the shots."

Participating in the clinic, hosted by Floyd County Public Health and Floyd County Animal Control, were veterinarians from Culbreth-Carr-Watson Animal Clinic, East Rome Animal Clinic, Mt. Berry Animal Hospital and Berry College.  Combined with 30 rabies vaccinations given at recent spay/neuter clinics hosted by Floyd County Animal Control, "that's over 300 Floyd County pets that have been vaccinated against rabies."

Pitts said another rabies vaccination would be scheduled in the fall, but encouraged pet owners not to wait.  "Get your pet vaccinated against rabies now.  It's the single best way to protect your pet from rabies," Pitts said.  "It's important to do it for their protection, for our protection and because it's state law.

Although most rabies cases occur in wildlife, most humans are given rabies vaccine as a result of exposure to rabid domestic animals, according to Pitts. "While wildlife are more likely to be rabid than are domestic animals, the amount of human contact with domestic animals greatly exceeds the amount of contact with wildlife."

"Your pets can be infected when they are bitten by rabid wild animals," Pitts said. "When 'spillover' rabies occurs in domestic animals, the risk to humans is increased.  We require pets to be vaccinated against rabies to prevent them from acquiring the disease from wildlife and possibly transmitting it to you," Pitts said. "The rabies vaccination protects you, too."

Pitts encouraged people with pets to:

·        visit your veterinarian with your pet on a regular basis and keep rabies vaccinations up-to-date for all cats, ferrets, and dogs,

·        maintain control of your pets by keeping cats and ferrets indoors and keeping dogs under direct supervision,

·        spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or vaccinated regularly and

·        call animal control to remove all stray animals from your neighborhood since these animals may be unvaccinated or ill.

Lewis: 411 Connector coming together; court challenge likely

-With environmental concerns about a mine found on the Rollins' property just about settled, Jeff Lewis of the State Transportation Board says the 411 Connector is "going forth as planned." But he also expects a federal court battle with the Rollins' family as their efforts continue to push the path from their land. Lewis, a former state House member, was a guest on Tuesday's Hometown Headlines Radio Edition on WRGA 1470 AM. He says he thought, as a young House member in the '90s, that the project would be completed by the early 2000s. But now, much of the preliminary work is done and he predicts right-of-way negotiations will begin soon, perhaps triggering the expected suit. Lewis declined to predict when the road might open, citing the legal battle and overall funding.

-Lewis recently spoke to members of the Coalition for the Right Road, a movement heavily supported by the Cookerly Public Relations firm hired by the Rollins family. The group this month hiked part of the intended connector route. CORR

AAA Projects 2.5% Decrease in Independence Day travel

(Media release) AAA forecasts 39 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend—a 2.5 percent decrease from the 40 million people who traveled last year. Florida (1.9 million total travelers) and Tennessee (701,127 total travelers) are expected to see a 2.7 percent decrease in overall travel; while Georgia (1 million total travelers) is projected to have a 2.4 percent drop in travel for the holiday weekend. The Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, June 30 to Monday, July 4.

"AAA projects a slight decrease in the number of Independence Day travelers as a result of gas prices averaging a dollar more per gallon than last year," said Brent Hubele, vice president, AAA Travel. "As with the Memorial Day holiday, the rising cost of fuel is having a more significant impact on those with lower household discretionary spends and has shifted the demographics of the typical Independence Day traveler."

Although the amount of money spent each month on gasoline is unlikely to vary much across household income groups, the share of total spending on fuel is going to consume a larger portion of the budget for lower income households. As a result, the percentage of travelers with a household income of $50,000 or less is expected to decrease from 41 percent to 33 percent, while travelers with a household income of more than $100,000 is expected to increase to 35 percent from 26 percent last year.

Auto Travel Projected to Decrease 3 Percent from Last Year

Approximately 32.8 million people plan to drive nationwide—a decrease of almost one million auto travelers from the 33.7 million who drove last year. Florida is projected to have 1.7 million auto travelers, a 3.8 percent decrease from last year. Georgia will see a 3.5 percent decrease in auto travel with 903,402 projected travelers. Tennessee is expected to have a 6.2 percent decrease in auto travel with approximately 619,502 auto travelers. Despite the declines, auto travel still remains the dominant mode of transportation for the holiday weekend, making up 84 percent of all holiday travelers.

Number of Air Travelers Expected to Increase 9 Percent Nationwide

Nationwide, a little more than 3 million leisure travelers (8 percent of total holiday travelers) will fly this holiday weekend, a 9 percent increase from last year's 2.75 million air travelers. Florida will see a 21.2 percent increase in air travel with 154,241 projected air travelers compared to the 127,299 last year. Georgia will also see a sharp increase in air travel of 21.5 percent with 83,485 air travelers compared to the 68,711 last year. Tennessee will see a slight increase of 2.1 percent in air travel of 30,856 air travelers compared to the 30,226 last year

The rising costs of gasoline as well as the shift in the traveler profile are contributing factors to the increase in air travel. For many, the increased cost of auto travel makes flying a more viable option, despite recent increases in air fares. The remaining 8 percent of holiday travelers are expected to travel by other modes of transportation such as rail, bus, or watercraft.

Airfares, Hotel, and Car Rental Rates to Increase this Year

Independence Day holiday airfares are expected to be 11 percent more than last year with an average lowest round-trip rate of $213 for the top 40 U.S. air routes. Hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to increase 3 percent from a year ago with travelers spending an average of $147 per night compared to $143 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels can expect to pay 8 percent more at an average cost of $110 per night. Weekend daily car rental rates will average $56, a 3 percent increase over a year ago, according to AAA's Leisure Travel Index.

Average Travel Distance Down 7 Percent; Median Spending Up 25 Percent

The average distance traveled by Americans during the Independence Day holiday weekend is expected to be 573 miles, 7 percent less than last year's average travel distance of 617 miles. However, median spending is expected to be $807, an increase of 25 percent from $644 last year.

DOT's Jeff Lewis: Ga. 140 widening to cost $55 million, could be done by 2015-17.

For more, please click www.hometownheadlines.com:

DOT's Jeff Lewis: Ga. 140 widening to cost $55 million, could be done by 2015-17. The interest in the retail distribution center proposed for Shannon -- believe to be on behalf of Lowes -- could require renewed commitments to four-lane Ga. 140 from the Ga. 53/140 intersection to Adairsville. Jeff Lewis, the area's representative on the state Transportation board, says a time table is in the works to get the project moving. The Federal Highway Administration just got the environmental study report and right-of-way negotiations could begin in several weeks. That process would take 30 months to complete with widening efforts starting afterward. Asked for a best guess on completition time, Lewis said somewhere between 2015-17. But how will it be funded? Lewis says some state funds would be used but most would come from the federal government. Lewis was a guest on Tuesday's Hometown Headlines Radio Edition on WRGA 1470 AM.
