As Steak N Shake prepares to sizzle, Village Theatres stay dark. McClellan's high school picks.1,500 free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches gone in 3 hours. Fall leaves--and fall wheezes

'Wait and see' for Village Theatres as Steak N Shake opening nears:

-In eight days, the other side of the parking lot at Village Plaza is going to be swamped. Steak N Shake's opening weeks will be similar to, if not greater, than what we normally see outside of Applebee's, especially on weekend nights. Exactly how it will play out starting Sept. 22 is a mystery--and among those watching will be Village Theatres. Robin Miller, the Rome-based theater group's general manager, says "we have no real plans right now" for the dark screens. That includes MB's, which had been doing comedy on the first Saturday of each month. "We want to see what happens," she says. The theater fills about half of the strip center, which also includes Ward's Pharmacy, Initially Twisted and Subway.

The number of the day -- 1,500:

-As in the number of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches given away Monday at The Dwarf House between 2 and 5 p.m. as part of customer appreciation week. That's an average of 500 an hour or 8.33 per minute. Today's thank-you gift: free small shakes from 2 to 5 p.m. Click

As Russell commits for NAIA 2010 title sponsorship, no word on extension:

-The good news from the host committee of the NAIA National Football Championship game is that Russell Athletic will return as title sponsor. But what remains up in the air: whether Rome will get the nod to continue hosting the game after this year's extension expires. Rome initially won a two-year commitment with a third year added (for the Dec. 18 game). Rome/Floyd County's approval of a SPLOST last year that included more than $3 million for Barron Stadium enhancements--including artificial turf--was thought to be the biggest missing piece from the contract renewal. The "rug" is now on the field. The official word is that the extension "is still in the works." The Russell Contract
