The prediction: A 2 percent year-over-year drop in sales. While the sales help consumers, what do they do to retailers who depend on the Christmas season revenue to get them through much of the rest of the year?> Trend

Even as they "acknowledged the challenges currently facing the state," three key economic leaders also accented the highlights of 2008 on Tuesday. Among them:
- Toyo Tire's expansion in Bartow County (Archive)
- Job expansion by NCR Corp., Newell Rubbermaid.
- The new Kia plant and satellite businesses
- The state "worked 313 business location and expansion projects" (File).
"The fact is that our state has strong assets upon which we will continue to build. Working together, I have no doubt that we will not only survive this recession, but come out of it well positioned for growth," says Ken Stewart, state economic development commission. >New name, owner for downtown bookstore: Second Chance Bookstore at 407 Broad St. is becoming Paradise Lost Book Store and will add free WiFi, coffee, hot chocolate. Marc Dawson sold it to a former employee, Alan Crocker. New hours: Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Look for an expand inventory and a place where folks want to hang out, read, talk and exchange books. >First casualty at RiverWalk: The restaurant-centric RiverWalk shopping center has lost its first tenant, Talk phone store (T-Mobile).The center has been an overall hit thanks to Olive Garden, Starbucks and Shane's. Still missing in action: Steak N Shake. Five other retail slots remain open.
