City ramping up for bigger things on West Third
Buzz Wachsteter sums up the withdrawal of the condo/retail project on West Third Street this way: "We're disappointed but not discouraged."
The veteran Rome city commissioner says the project proposed by Tom Hackett and David Doss was a good one but given today's financial crunch, it couldn't take off. The city has refunded $15,000 of the developers' $20,000 deposit (as per the contract) and is quickly moving to Plan C.
That is, marketing the site with new ammunition. He points to several changes:
-The city takes possession of several buildings in the West Third area on Jan. 1, including the Dempsey auction site.
-The latest word is that the Marines will leave in mid-2009, freeing the rec department to move to that site (paid by part of the recent SPLOST package).
-Both moves open more land for redevelopment.
One attractive idea: The addition of another full-service hotel, augmenting the expansion of Hawthorn Suites and making The Forum far more marketable. The hotels would service both convention interests who want to be able to walk from their accommodations to the meeting site and to those using Floyd Medical Center and the proposed cancer center.
Also helping with a new marketing effort: With the tax allocation district controversy settled, the city has a stronger package for would-be developers. (Related story)

Christmas parade captures family spirit
It didn't matter that the temperature was fit for the North Pole--40 degrees at best. At precisely 6:30 p.m., the annual Rome Christmas Parade started down a very packed Broad Street and didn't stop until 100 units and 20,000 fans later. In between were the Marines, grand marshals Bill and Martha Fricks, the Clydesdales, area high school bands, the first-year Shorter College Band and floats from a slew of schools, churches and community groups. By 7:35 p.m., cars were flowing smoothly out of downtown.
