Mohawk shutting distribution center in Shannon, idling 79 people

Rumors flew Monday about another pending layoff in an already "hard-hit" community and those reports are now confirmed. The Daily Citizen in Dalton reports Mohawk is closing the Shannon distribution center within two months and laying off 79 workers. (Click) A company spokesman tells the newspaper it will try to place the workers at other Mohawk plants.

-Mohawk cut 158 jobs in Armuchee in February and also has closed plants in Fort Oglethorpe (231 jobs), Dahlonega (388 jobs) and Dalton (66 jobs) this year.

-For Shannon, it is another setback following the closings of Galey & Lord and Florida Tile in recent years. Also, interest in the chamber-owned site near Ga. 140 and Ga. 53 is said to be cooling because of the economy.

-We'll have more updates throughout the day.

West Third condo deal off? The Rome News is reporting the Tom Hackett/David Doss deal with the city to build condos on the West Third side of the Oostanaula is off because of economic concerns. In addition to residential and retail, the site had an A-level restaurant in the mix.> RNT

More closings in the restaurant industry

-Bartow County is seeing a few restaurant closings. The latest are Opi's and T-Bones, both in Adairsville. Opi's new site in downtown Rome adjacent to the Hawthorn Suites/River Crossing complex is booming. T-Bone's was the second location of a steakhouse started --and since closed-- near Mount Berry Square. -Also gone from the Bartow scene: Flamingo's Pizza Pub at 801 West Ave. And now comes word Church Street Tea Garden will close after this month's events.

-But on the plus side: Grand opening specials are under way today

through Wednesday at the San Antonia Burrito Bar at 17 Public Square. The hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and until 9:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The special: The first 50 people customers today or Wednesday get a complimentary beverage. The restaurant features both beer and margaritas.
