State of the Economy:
'Dreadful' start to 2009; 'longest downturn since the Great Depression'
The latest Selig Center economic forecast is about as rough as they come. Some of the lowlights from UGA Dean Robert T. Sumichrast's presentation Wednesday:
-The recession will be "severe rather than mild and prolonged rather than short." -The "first and second quarters of 2009 will be dreadful. Just how dreadful depends on when, and to what degree, the credit markets thaw."
-Sumichrast predicts the recession will last 18 months. "It will be the longest downturn since the Great Depression."
-But he stopped short of calling the current economic cycle a depression.

Trouble brewing for mall owners? A cryptic release from an investment rating service is signaling potential changes for The Lighthouse Portfolio, owners of Mount Berry Square. What it says: "The largest specially serviced loan, the Lightstone Portfolio (3.5%), is 60 days delinquent and was transferred to special servicing in October 2008 due to imminent default. The Lightstone Portfolio is secured by four anchored retail properties located in Martinsburg, W. Va.; Rome, Ga. Hermitage, Penn.; and Cleveland, Tenn.... The borrower has approached the lender indicating that they would like to surrender the properties and is cooperating in the appointment of a receiver." Full release
Cartersville's Fuddruckers getting company at Guyton Park: Speculation that the Cartersville franchise of Fuddruckers on Tennessee Street is closing is bogus, says owner Charles J. Curlee. Comments appearing on the Bartow Life Web forum conclude a Japanese steak house would fill the spot. Ron Goss Jr. confirms a steak house is coming at Guyton Park Village Center--in the former Coffee Depot location--around Feb. 1. The owner just opened Blue Fin in Rome and is out of the country at this time; he owns several restaurants so the exact format of the Cartersville store isn't known. Curlee also owns the Rome Fuddruckers across from State Mutual Stadium.
