Rome is ready to crown a national champion
>Check back for updates throughout the day, Saturday morning
There's something different about Broad Street these days. The "Abbey Road effect" remains at key crosswalks but there's a new item of interest as well: Stencils of the NAIA championship icon, a bright white reminder of what's under way this weekend.
If you prefer color, drive by the levy off Second Avenue across from Barron Stadium. There you'll find a full-color stencil also saluting the game that will crown a national champion football team.
From Darlington practice fields to local hotels to downtown churches to The Forum and Barron Stadium, everything is ready. Even snowed-in football teams or last-minute dinner plan changes haven't caused a ripple as the community shows why it is a worthy host of this year's game, the 2010 showdown and maybe a few more, too.
Rome has been in the sports spotlight in recent years thanks to the Braves, the Tour de Georgia and five runs at minor league sports championships (with three titles won by Rome teams). But this one is different as word "Rome" already is showing up in newspaper and Web site pages with a national TV audience to follow Saturday. Welcome to the NAIA championship experience.

Health updates
Big week for Cancer Navigators gets bigger:
It started with reports of the proceeds from the 2009 Rome Braves Hot Stove Gathering being earmarked for Cancer Navigators It is ending with news that General Electric is planning to donate $75,000 toward the ongoing operations of the total resource center dedicated to cancer patients and their families. When coupled with the new Breast Center initiative at Floyd Medical Center (story), it puts a fitting end on Northwest Georgia's continuing battle against cancer. We're hoping 2009 brings word of the long-planned cancer center.
