Latest layoffs could put 600 out of work in Northwest Georgia

Three more major layoffs have been announced in Northwest Georgia:

-Calhoun: Shaw Industries is cutting 125 jobs, reports The Daily Citizen in Dalton. "Shaw will contract with a Calhoun-based company for cutting, sewing and packaging at rug facility Plant 7G, allowing Shaw to focus on tufting, dyeing and coating. The departments will remain open through the middle of January."

-Thomas Industries, also known as TI Acquisitions LLC of Dalton, is idling 379 people, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. More details pending.

-Hutcheson Medical Center in Fort Oglethorpe is cutting 88 people. The move, says marketing director Agnes Cloud, represents the medical center's decision to get out of the EMS/ambulance business. With the contract expiring, the responsibility for EMS service will shift to Walker, Dade and Catoosa counties, she says.

-Since Jan. 1, nearly 2,350 has lost their jobs in major layoffs in eight area counties including Floyd, Bartow, Polk, Gordon and Chattooga.

It appears the Hillyer House in Oakdene has new life. GMAC has agreed to spruce it up a bit while working on legal issues and plans to offer the property for eventual purchase. Tricia Steele, a nearby homeowner who has been an advocate for saving the onetime bed-and-breakfast, said: "After months of working every possible angle to save the Hillyer House, I am pleased to say that it is finally in a position to have a real chance.  At this point, the mortgage company and the neighborhood are aligned. We all want something good to come of the place that has brought heartache for many in recent years."

School board fires two Model High coaches: Matthew Blanton and Daniel Brown were fired Tuesday night following a closed meeting of the Floyd County Board of Education. In separate incidents, both were accused of having inappropriate behavior with a student. Blanton, Model's basketball coach, was relieved of duties Monday. Brown was relieved effective Tuesday. In both cases, the school system "has notified law enforcement and the Professional Standards Commission and is cooperating fully in an ongoing investigation." Both Blanton and Brown waived their right to appeal their dismissals. Earlier questions about Blanton's conduct were investigated by both the school system and by law enforcement, and both found the accusations to be unsubstantiated, school officials said Tuesday.
