-Small Business Development Center stretched even further: In just weeks, the Small Business Development Center has gone from having two consultants assigned to the Heritage Hall office to no local quarters and one person serving Northwest Georgia, working out of Dalton. Cutbacks by Georgia Highlands College and the SBDC saw the Rome and Dalton offices consolidate, with Peter Matthews named to lead the district from Dalton. Now Matthews has joined Heritage First Bank (click Matthews), leaving the center with one active consultant. Allan Adams, who leads the program, says he hopes to be able to hire a replacement--not a given because of the economy. If so, the search could last a few months as is the normal hiring and review process, he says. Until then, the Dalton consultant will work with clients in Rome, Cartersville, Calhoun and Dalton, Adams says> SBDC
-'Future' Rome Hooters tied to another sale? An ad placed on The Schumacher Group real estate site on behalf of Hooters' corporate office lists an operating Hooters location for sale after a recent attempted purchase blew up over financing. In the type are these words: "This sale comes with territorial rights to open stores in the Rome and Dalton markets along with other opportunities." The former Hooters spot at Etowah shopping center has a new "for lease" sign in the front window. The "new" Hooters that was to open Memorial Day weekend in front of State Mutual Stadium remains vacant. Look for listing no.715 after clicking Schumacher

-Passing the hat to support Chambliss: Area Republicans and others have received an e-mail, seeking both permission to use their names -- and hopeful donations -- for a newspaper ad supporting U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss in the Dec. 2 runoff. Organizers are attempting to raise $3,500 to pay for the ad in the Rome News, according to the e-mail. Radio ads already are planned. The RNT ad is especially interesting--aside from the cost--when you consider the paper endorsed Democrat Jim Martin in the general election (Archive). Local Republicans are planning a "Rally for Saxby" on Saturday as well (Meetings). Chambliss received nearly 60 percent of the votes cast in Floyd County on Nov. 4.
