First-time jobless benefit claims hit 1,125 in Floyd last month

Another jolt to the economy was in the e-mail inbox this morning: The Georgia Department of Labor reports first-time jobless claims soared by nearly 90 percent in Rome, coming in at 1,125 claims in October vs. 599 in the same month last year. -Statewide: the increase in year-over-year benefit claims was 75 percent (Details).

-Among the hardest hit: nearby Dalton with nearly 4,300 claims filed last month. 

Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael L. Thurmond -Says Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond: "For the third consecutive month, initial claims in Georgia have risen by more than 70 percent over the year. These statistics confirm that Georgians are facing a difficult economic environment. The rising tide of unemployment, housing foreclosures, the credit and fiscal crisis and the lingering drought have converged to form a perfect storm." 

-Layoffs have come across-the-board: Manufacturing, construction, retail trade and private employment agencies have been especially hard hit, labor officials say. The latest in Rome: 91 jobs cut at Temple-Inland's box plant.

Latest buzz from Broad Street

-Parker Systems creating a tech hub at 704 Broad St.: The Summerville fiber company already has an A-plus level client list in Northwest Georgia. Within a few weeks, those clients and others will have even more tech needs met including bonus server space, a 100-percent-ready "loaner" office should an on-site emergency lead to a quick relocation and a storm-proof office in case of tornadoes. -Rome City Market continues interior, exterior work: More than two years in the making, Walt Adams' Rome City Market is much more visible along Broad Street. The sign is now up and the "patio" area has been added. The most recent reports have Rome City Market opening next month. In addition to a cafe and wine shop, look for Riverside Gourmet to jump across Broad to join the market complex.

-'Georgia Focus' features Northwest Georgia Credit Union's Michelle Stricklin: The interim president of Northwest Georgia Credit Union, Michelle Stricklin, is among those interviewed for the "Georgia Focus" radio program  to be broadcast this Saturday and Sunday on WRGA 1470 AM/WSRM 95.3 FM. The program from the Georgia Radio Network is hosted by John Clark. The topic: How credit unions are faring well in these economic times.

-Georgia revenue collections off by $1.14 million in October:  The latest net revenue numbers from the state are out. Collections for October were $1,386,860,000 vs. $1,387,997,000 for October 2007, a decrease of $1,137,000 or 0.1 percent, according to Gov. Sonny Perdue's office. Year to date, collections are off 2 percent vs. last fiscal year.
