Jobless rate climbs to highest level in 16 years

Chart: Georgia Department of Labor

What it means:

>Georgia lost 24,800 jobs in September vs. August, the state Department of Labor reports.

>The number of Georgians who had jobs dropped to 4.1 million last month, the lowest level in at least 13 months.

>The jobless rate is now at 6.5 percent, up two full points from 4.5 percent in September 2007. The last time Georgia's unemployment rate reached this level was in November 1992 when it was 6.6 percent.
>Over the last year, the number of payroll jobs decreased 53,200 or 1.3 percent. This is the largest September-to-September decline in jobs since 64,500 were lost from September 2001 to September 2002, the period following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

>The over-the-year job losses came across-the-board in manufacturing, construction, trade, and services.
-The local jobless rate will be released later this month.
