Business

Chamber After Hours offers two takes on the economy: Thursday evening's Business After Hours was perhaps one of the best attended in recent months. Amid tours of River City Bank's new headquarters at Second Avenue and West Third Street, there were lots of "sidebar" conversations about jobs, job changes and more of those 401k "jokes." Turnout perhaps was spurred by those curious about the new office as well as needed back-to-basics networking among members.

Chamber President Al Hodge kept the mood positive, briefly explaining the rising interest by corporations in Rome/Floyd County. The emphasis again shifted to enhancements and future options at Richard B. Russell  Airport/Towers Field. No names were mentioned but two big fish continue to be discussed offline. Hodge, acknowledging the economy, said: "This community is not going to accept that." He cited previous steps made to market Rome/Floyd that could soon pay dividends.

The site of the after hours--in a bank's corporate office--also was purposeful. Roger Smith, president of River City Bank, offered a look inside the two-plus-year-old bank's ledger, reporting assets of $200 million including $50 million in trust assets. Those numbers and overall performance of community banks helped offset the gloom associated with the status of some major banks in recent months.
