With Lance back, can Rome score a return of Tour de Georgia in 2009?

The chatter among the Tour de Georgia enthusiasts in 2004 was that Lance Armstrong was dazzled by the planned time trial trip around Mount Alto.  He won tour_de_georgia_logo.jpgthat event as well as the race to Rome the day before and the overall Tour event that year. Now comes word that Armstrong is coming out of retirement with plans to enter five races, including the tours de France--and Georgia. With Armstrong "in" for 2009, will it increase Rome's chances of returning to host status? Rome was a five-time destination until Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle--now Tour czar--spun the '07 race into much of his former Senate district in Northeast Georgia. As of Monday, Rome had not been invited to bid for a 2009 stop> Lance

Small Business Development Center closing, cites loss of GHC funding: The Rome office of UGA's Small Business Development Center closes effective Sept. 30 because of the loss of a $47,000 commitment from Georgia Highlands College, according to the center's statewide director. GHC is "rescinding its contract" which accounted for matching funds of $47,000 for the Rome office, says Allan Adams, adding that the SBDC can't sustain the office without that match. Dana Davis, GHC's director of college relations, says college administators didn't know the center's fate until Monday morning. Adams says the Rome office oversees Bartow, Gordon, Polk, Chatooga and Paulding counties. Clients in those counties will be shared by SBDC offices in Dalton and Kennesaw.

Tuesday's Buzz

>Tough economic times hitting campaigns, too? We're hearing some comments from political sources on both sides about contributions being a bit tougher to come by this year. Candidates are having to be more frugal than before. We'll see at least three fund-raisers this weekend (barbecues for Steve Hulsey, Ron Morris and a restaurant-based event for Barbara Massey Reece) this weekend followed by another barbecue for Irwin Bagwell on Sept. 20. We'll have a better look at economics when the quarterly campaign finance reports come out early next month.

But if we do this and we don't reform the system and we let them go back to business as usual … we would be making a huge mistake. In fact, I would label it as a dereliction of duty."> RTT News
