POLITICS/Tracking the candidates' contributions

The State Ethics Commission has a new map posted that lets you track from where--and from whom--candidates get their campaign contributions (Click Here). You can track candidates for state House, Senate, judicial races, district attorney and others.

The map is color coded to indicate how much money came from the county or from each Zip code. A search of the overall index, for all candidates in all state races this year, shows:

>Bartow contributors had given $36,862. One reason was the tight GOP primary race that saw incumbent state Rep. Jeff Lewis defeated by Paul Battles. Also, the district attorney's race between incumbent Joe Campbell and challenger Christian Coomer. Campbell won on July 15.

>Floyd contributors had given $17,675. None of the races tracked by the SEC had contested primary candidates.

>Gordon contributors had given $15,060. A big factor was the Campbell-Coomer DA's race that also included Bartow County.

>Chattooga contributors had given $4,950. None of the races tracked by the SEC had contested primary candidates.

>Polk contributors hade given $7,325. None of the races tracked by the SEC had contested primary candidates.

What's interesting about the maps: You can drill into each race and see how the candidates did on home turf.

>Example: Rep. Katie Dempsey had raised $189,816 through June 30 (map) vs. $16,500 for Democratic challenger Bob Puckett (map). But check each of their reports by the Zip codes in the 13th district, 30161 and 30165. Puckett received $100 more than Dempsey ($4,800 to $4,700) on home turf in the period examined.

>In Bartow County, it shows the disparity in funds raised between Lewis and Battles. In "home" Zip code 30120, Battles collected $21,253 to Lewis' $3,250.

WRNT: Web video studio coming to Rome News? Look for the emerging video war to escalate as the Rome News prepares a video studio to shoot TV-like Webcasts. The concept has been discussed among video enthusiasts in Greater Rome in recent weeks. We're told the studio would produce Web-only newscasts as opposed to items meant for cable television. You can expect advertising ventures as well. In recent days, the Newswire has told of plans to expand video efforts here. Real Fast News also produces a growing number of local video reports.

Gang of 10, Gingrey, GOP oil impasse update: The differences over the bipartisan fuel deal supported by Georgia U.S. senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, and criticized by U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, takes another turn as Gingrey's support of a House bipartisan measure surfaced from earlier this month. Gingrey's staff said it is one of a series of measures Gingrey supports in an effort to move the oil debate toward resolution> GOP

The business will follow county guidelines concerning the sale of adult books and magazines which are restricted to about a third of total operations. The shop on Ga. 53 in Shannon also known for its vast inventory of adult novelties and lingerie, according to the company Web site.
