Latest Kids Count report has stunning news for region, state: A new study released this week has some grim news for Northwest Georgia and the rest of the state. Georgia is ranked 40th in the nation for the overall well-being of children, improving slightly from the 2007 rank of 41st. The 2008 Kids Count Data Book also shows that "one in five children in this state lives in poverty and the rate of low-birth weight babies, and the percentage of children having babies, are still among the highest in America." The state ranks below the national average in all 10 key indicators--and in the bottom 10 when it comes to infant mortality rate, high school dropouts, low birth weight babies, teen birth rate and children living in single-parent families. A comparison of state and county-by-county numbers show even worse statistics in some categories. Click Floyd | Bartow | Gordon | Polk | Chattooga

The source: layoffs in manufacturing and other industries pushed the number of unemployed workers up from 258,191 in April to 284,816 in May, the highest level ever recorded in Georgia. Local numbers are due in two weeks.
