>Will Steak N Shake's quarterly report offer clues on Rome site? Steak N Shake's second-quarter financial statement due Wednesday should offer clues about where the company is headed (i.e., Rome?). For the first quarter, Steak N Shake reported sales of $136.4 million, down 7.4 percent from a year earlier; a loss of $1.2 million vs. earnings of $4.2 million; plus a 9.5 percent drop in "same-store" sales. It is the final "major" expected to join RiverWalk. Calls to the regional and corporate offices weren't returned Monday.
>Mixed results for parent company of Carmike 12 Cinemas: The company lost $4.3 million for the first quarter vs. a $3.7 million loss for the same quarter last year. But Carmike reported gains in admissions, concessions> Carmike
>First Pirelli, then Toyo, now Kumho tires coming to Georgia: Georgia is becoming where the rubber hits the road. Pirelli North America came to Rome in 2002 and Toyo Tire North America three years later in White. Now comes Korea's Kumho Tire Co. Groundbreaking for a $225 million plant in Macon was held Monday. It will employ 450 people; production begins in October 2009.

>With primary nine weeks away, local political parties staying busy: Next up is the Georgia Republican Party's state convention Friday and Saturday in Columbus. In addition to updates on the Republican National Convention, attendees likely will hook up with GOP candidates on the 2008 ballot and those shooting for the 2010 elections. Also in coming days:

-Perdue to sign Loudermilk's 'Red Light Camera' bill Wednesday: Gov. Sonny Perdue is scheduled to sign into law House Bill 77 sponsored by state Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, that requires permits and several other key steps for any red light cameras in use in Georgia. (Click HB 77). The ceremony is set for 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the governor's office. Loudermilk, who represents parts of Bartow and Floyd counties, has been critical of red light cameras, citing due process concerns outlined in the Constitution among other reasons.

Gas watch/Prices surge 4, 5 cents on Monday (updated 5/13)
>Statewide average climbs to $3.72: A year ago, we were paying $2.89 for a gallon of unleaded and were fuming about it. This morning, the statewide average is at $3.72, up five cents since late Sunday. Summer vacation season, perhaps?
