Northwest Georgia's jobless rate improved from March's gloomy reports. Even Chattooga County, which led the state in overall jobless rate for two consecutive months, saw the April report drop out of double digits. Jenkins and Hancock counties had the highest jobless rates in April. Bartow County showed a rise in the number of people without jobs in April while Floyd, Gordon, Chattooga and Polk counties reported declines. However, when compared to April 2007 reports, all five counties showed from moderate to significant increases. Overall, some 9,560 people in the five-county area were without jobs last month vs.7,126 in April 2007, a 34 percent increase. Fueling local concerns this year have been layoffs and closings at Wheeler's, Mohawk and Pierre Foods.
