Free meals served to children this summer, according to Floyd County Schools

Media release: School is out but food is still in for children in Floyd County.  Summer is here and many in our community who rely on the school food service program during the school year to provide quality, delicious and nutritious meals for their children are concerned about how they will provide their children with the food they need while school is out. We have good news for those parents and children! The U.S. Department of Agriculture is partnering with local communities again this year to serve free meals for children and Floyd County Schools is teaming up with local churches and organizations to meet the needs of our children.

"There are no income requirements, and any child under the age of 18 may visit one of the community locations to get a good meal," stated Donna Carver, director of School Nutrition for Floyd County Schools. "Site meal times will vary but we will providing food for children Monday through Friday at some of our local school cafeterias and many community locations."

Walk-in sites will be located in the cafeterias at the following Floyd County Schools with meals served for breakfast and lunch each Monday through Friday through August 2. Locations will begin serving breakfast from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 to 12 noon

  • Model High School
  • Pepperell High School
These additional cafeteria locations will serve only lunch from 11 to 12 noon.
  • Cave Spring Elementary
  • Garden Lakes Elementary
  • McHenry Primary School

Working with community agencies, churches and volunteers; there are a number of other community locations where meals will be served during the summer. "This is an extremely vital program for our community and we appreciate the opportunity to work with the many organizations and volunteers coming together to make this possible for the children of our community," said Dr. Jeff McDaniel, superintendent of Floyd County Schools. "The number of children in our schools who qualify for free and reduced meals has risen sharply during the economic downturn so this program will help many of our struggling families." You can get a complete list of locations, dates and times on the Floyd County Schools website at www.floydboe.net or click this link http://www.floydboe.net/cms/one.aspx?portalId=3118197&pageId=14681339 to be taken directly to the page with a complete list of community sites.

Carver added, "If you don't see a site listed that is in your area, please contact Floyd County Schools and we may be able to assist you in locating a site that may be close to you."
