Media release: Matthew Dempsey, a senior at Pepperell High School, has been selected as the school's STAR student for 2013. Dempsey named Allison Goggans, a world history, honors world history and AP European history teacher, as his STAR Teacher. Dempsey and Goggans were honored recently at a student assembly at Pepperell High.
Dempsey has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during his time at Pepperell High. When he graduates, he will have completed a total of 14 AP and honors courses. He has been active in Mock Trial, FBLA, Math Club, golf, cross country, the Select Ensemble and the drama program. While at Pepperell, Dempsey has won various awards, including the Georgia Certificate of Merit and the American History award. He won the PHS nomination for the Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest. Dempsey is also an Honors graduate of Boys State.
Dempsey will graduate with an Honors College Preparatory Seal in May and he will be one of the PHS Valedictorians of the Class of 2013. Dempsey plans to attend Georgia Tech and major in materials science.
The Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) award, sponsored by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce; the Georgia Department of Education and the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, is presented to a high-school senior with the school's highest SAT score and ranking in the top ten percent or top ten members of the school's senior class. Each STAR student selects a STAR Teacher in the recognition program.
