Smith joins Georgia Northwestern Technical College from the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) where she served as the regional economic development coordinator for the 13 counties of the Georgia Mountains Region of Northeast Georgia (Region 2) and acted as a liaison for local economic developers by connecting them with resources and programs that were available within the Georgia Department of Labor. Prior to working at the GDOL, Smith owned two small companies and operated as an ACT WorkKeys® Profiler for over five years in addition to proctoring the Georgia Work Ready Assessments. She holds a platinum Georgia Work Ready Certificate and was instrumental in helping Bartow County achieve the Certified Work Ready Community designation.
Smith brings to GNTC years of experience with technical education. She served for over 13 years at the former North Metro Technical College (now Chattahoochee Technical College) in several administrative roles including vice president of Economic Development, vice president of Student Services, registrar, director of the Work Ready Program, director of Admissions, and was also an adjunct instructor.
She earned an education specialist degree from The University of Georgia in Adult Education with a functional minor in Counseling Psychology, a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma in Human Relations, and a bachelor's degree from Troy State University in Resources Management with a minor in Psychology. She is also a Certified Economic Developer Trainer.
Smith was the 2010 chair of the board of directors of the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce and is a graduate of the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class of 2000. She also served on the Chattahoochee Technical College Adult Education advisory committee as well as various other boards, committees, and civic organizations.
As vice president of Adult Education at GNTC, Smith will be responsible for the management of adult education programs and instructional services at GNTC. Her responsibilities include the oversight of assessment and student placement tests for Adult Education students, maintenance of student records, hiring and supervising Adult Education employees, and promotion of the Adult Education program to public and private organizations throughout GNTC's service area.
In Fiscal Year 2012, the Office of Adult Education served 3,154 students in programs of adult reading, writing, science, social studies, literature, mathematics, English as a second language, and preparation for the General Educational Development (GED®) Tests. The GNTC testing centers graduated 825 students with a GED® Diploma. Georgia Northwestern Technical College serves Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties in Georgia with campuses located in Floyd, Gordon, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties. Approximately 22,000 people benefit from GNTC's credit and noncredit programs, making it the largest college in Northwest Georgia and the fourth largest technical college in Georgia.
