Saturday: Free Tax Assistance from Berry College Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Media release: As tax day draws near, the Berry College Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will prepare taxes today from 3 to 6 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Community members and students are encouraged to come by and have their taxes assessed. The VITA program is a student-run team designed to assist families and individuals with moderate level of income to complete their annual tax return free of charge. The program began three years ago under Berry College Campbell School of Business Dean John Grout.

"The potential for VITA and Berry College to help the community are tremendous," Grout said. "In past years we have put many thousands of dollars back into the pockets of VITA clientele both as costs savings because preparation is free and because of claiming earned income tax credits for clients. We hope to provide even greater benefits to the community this year."

Berry's VITA team consists of seven student accounting majors. Kseniya Shakhova, sophomore and site coordinator for the program, said it's been a great method for her and her fellow students to practice what they've learned in their accounting courses.

"I love seeing the client's happy faces when they discover that they are due to refund," Shakhova said. "It makes all the hours studying and preparing for tax season worth it."
