Hollywood star-struck by the beauty of NW Georgia:
Film scenes, famous actor, wake up sleepy country road
By Michelle Picon
A little bit of Hollywood is still in Northwest Georgia several days after Robert Pattinson, the vampire of Twilight series fame, filmed several scenes for a movie in which he co-stars with Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon.
As of Monday afternoon, film production equipment could still be seen around the farm house in West Cove Road in Chickamauga where the filming took place last Friday. A security guard keeps watch at the entrance to the property, located on the scenic and very quiet two-lane country road in Walker County.
On Friday, excited Pattinson fans came from as far away as Florida and Illinois to try to get a glimpse of Pattinson. "He didn't go out to say hello to anyone," said a security guard about the well-known actor. "He worked hard. He worked a 14-hour day, in a wool suit, in 100 degree weather."
"There were hundreds of people in the area," said a Rome contractor doing work at a house in West Cove Road on Friday morning. "Cars were lined up for about half a mile each way on both sides of the road. People were parking and taking out their cameras. There were little girls all over the place jumping up and down. There was also a lot of activity around the house."
The movie is Water for Elephants, based on a New York Times' bestseller novel about a traveling circus during the Great Depression. The film is set for release in 2011.
A security guard at the scene said that the 14 hours of filming will lead to short opening and closing scenes where the character played by Pattinson visits his parents' house. Filming reportedly was to resume on Monday at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga.
The area chosen for the movie is one of the most scenic in the Northwest Georgia and is only an hour's drive from Rome. Coming from the Chattanooga side, West Cove Road leads to the area known to locals as McLemore's Cove.
In October 2008, 18,000 acres of McLemore's Cove were put under state wildlife preservation, connecting the 17,000 acre Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area to the 93-acre Zahnd Natural Area on Lookout Mountain, according to an October 2008 Walker County Messenger report. The acquisition was formerly a part of the Mountain Cove Farms owned by a Rome family. Walker County now owns the buildings that once made up the Mountain Cove Farms, said the report.
