ROME GETS THIRD NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP; MORE TO COME?
Shorter Athletics Director Bill Peterson, with Host committee co-chair Bob Berry to his right, discusses the NAIA's decision to extend Rome's hosting of the national championship game an additional year.
The bid by Shorter College and Rome/Floyd County to host a third--and potentially more -- NAIA national championship football games has paid off. Rome will be the site of the Dec. 18, 2010, game. Local organizers petitioned NAIA officials for a third game (Rome hosted in 2008 and does so again on Dec. 19) with an option for a longer-term contract depending on the Nov. 3 SPLOST vote. The package includes $3.36 million in enhancements for Barron Stadium, including artificial turf. The 2008 game had a local economic impact of $1.5 million.
