May 18: Salvation Army of Greater Rome to host community gathering honoring Salvation Army Week

Media release: The Salvation Army of the greater Rome, GA area will be hosting a community
celebration on May 18, 2013 at The Salvation Army located at 310 East 2nd Avenue in downtown Rome, GA. This
event is to celebrate National Salvation Army Week. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the United
States Congress declared there to be a week to recognize the work of The Salvation Army. Dwight D. Eisenhower
stated, "Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of
brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country
far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant
reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans, giving freely of themselves, the men and
women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of all."
 
This year The Salvation Army will be focusing of the work of redemption and hope at The Salvation Army Family
Store. The Family Store exists to help fund services and programs for the community. Some things that the Family
Stores provide are jobs in the community, availability of affordable clothing to those in need as well as free clothing
for those in emergency situations, prescription assistance, rent & utility assistance, food pantry, and the Emergency
Shelter for Homeless and At-Risk. Along with these community life-changing services, the Family Store helps to
provide character-building programs to men, women, and children in the greater Rome, GA area through music
classes, drama programs, children's summer camps, and life skills classes for men, women, and families. These
programs teach life skills as well as enrich their spiritual life and are provided at no cost to participants. All of the
money raised by the Family Store stays to benefit the people and programs in the greater Rome, GA area.
 
Some of the activities will include a donation drive, cookout, bake sale, and sale in the Family Store. Everyone is
welcome to stop by and see what it going on, and the people who are being helped, at The Salvation Army.
