Media release: Four students from Georgia Highlands College were named to the All-Georgia Academic Team, a program sponsored by two-year college presidents, the national honor society for two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa, and community college state associations.  Two of the students, Marie McCary and Victor Williams, attend GHC-Floyd, and the other two, Amelia Bagwell and Meagan Williams, attend classes at the Cartersville campus.   Bagwell and McCary attended the recent recognition luncheon in Atlanta.  Meagan Williams and Victor Williams were unable to attend.

Each college may nominate two students from each of its campuses to the All-USA Academic Team.  Students from Georgia nominated to the national team make up the All-Georgia Academic Team. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community.

Amelia Bagwell was also selected as a 2013 Coca-Cola Bronze Scholar based on scores earned in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition, of which more than 1,800 applications were received this year.  That program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and is administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.  The Coca-Cola foundation recognizes 50 gold, 50 silver and 50 Bronze scholars, and provides nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually.  Bronze scholars receive $1,000 each.

Bagwell, a nontraditional student, is the mother of four young adults, two of whom are in college – one at GHC, one at Emory University.  She plans to earn a baccalaureate and a master's degree in psychology.  She may also add a teaching degree.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recognizes the Coca-Cola Community College scholars during separate ceremonies held in 38 states and at the annual international conference, which will be held this year in San Jose, California.Media
