Media release: For the last four or five years the chancellor of the University System of Georgia has hosted a golf tournament near Athens for the dual purpose of fostering community among institutional stakeholders and raising funds for charitable organizations. The foursomes come from all 31 institutions within the university system. Each institution can bring guests. The teams pay a fee to play, and the top three winners receive a check that, in turn, they contribute to their favorite charities. In all, it's a win-win day. Everyone has fun, and deserving service organizations get an increase to their coffers by a modest amount.
-Georgia Highlands College has taken a team to the tournament for the last two years. And for the last two years, GHC has won first place. The GHC team included Jay Stepp of Cartersville; Jeff Watkins, GHC Foundation board nember from Cartersville; Carl Lutjens, GHC alumnus; and Rob Whitaker, vice president for finance and administration at GHC.
-Both Hospitality House, a shelter for abused women in Rome, and the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter in Cartersville received donations of $750 from GHC.
-Amy Weaver, director of Hospitality House, said, "We are honored that we were chosen to receive this gift from Georgia Highlands because there are so many organizations to choose from."
