Berry's Campus Carrier staff wins seven awards

Media release: The Berry College student newspaper, Campus Carrier, earned
seven awards for journalism excellence in this year's Georgia College Press
Association Better Newspaper Contest. The newspaper received the third place
award for general excellence in its division at the annual ceremony, held
Saturday at the GCPA Press Institute in Athens, Ga.
"I feel like third place is something to be proud of and it gives us an idea
of what we need to work toward for next year. We went up against some very
worthy competition and were able to come away with some good ideas from what
those newspapers are doing," said Bonny Harper, a senior from Athens, Ga.,
who currently serves as editor-in-chief for the publication. "My staff has
always be very receptive to criticism and has shown an amazing capability to
take advice. They are very adaptable, dedicated and willing to work hard."
"The Berry community is fortunate to have so many caring and devoted
newspaper staff members that consistently try to tell great stories," Kevin
Kleine, senior lecturer of journalism and student publications adviser,
said. "The future of Georgia journalism is alive and well given what I see
here at Berry."
Staff achievement within a variety of categories was awarded in the Senior B
Division, which includes all four-year Georgia colleges and universities
with enrollments under 8,000. Campus Carrier staff awards included:

• First place – General Layout and Design Excellence
• Second place – Best Campus Community Service – Features
• Second place – Improvement Excellence
• Third place – Best Campus Community Service – News
• Third place – General Advertising Excellence

Individual Award: (not divided by size of institution)
• Third place – Best Review – Sydney Kelly of Powder Springs, Ga.
"I told our staff to use the results this year as motivation to improve in
the future," Harper said, "Our main concern should always be to serve the
students of Berry College with compelling and accurate reporting."
