Media release: Academic Decathlon teams from Coosa High, Armuchee High and Pepperell High will join nineteen other teams at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County this week to vie for the title of Georgia Academic Decathlon State Champion. To have one team in the championship battle is wonderful but to have three competing is a testament to the academic talent of teens in Floyd County high schools. The championship competition to be held February 22 and 23 is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), The PAGE Foundation, Apple, the Georgia Department of Education and Oglethorpe Power.
Coosa High School was the champion of the Floyd County Academic Decathlon held in January. Each district winner represents its school system at the state competition. Armuchee High finished second in the local competition and Pepperell High placed a close third. Teams that do not place first in the school system competitions are invited to submit their scores for consideration as Wild-Card teams in the state finals. Armuchee High and Pepperell High were two of just nine teams throughout the state to be invited to participate as Wild-Cards.
The PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon is a competition in which teams of high-school students (grades 9-12) compete in 10 academic events. Team and individual honors are awarded in the competition. The Academic Decathlon program is unique because each nine-member team is comprised of a variety of academic talent levels in the classroom. Students with the highest academic honors compete in the Honor category, next follows the Scholastic division and then Varsity. Three students from each team participate in the different levels. Students are tested in seven content areas: economics, art. language and literature, mathematics, science, social science and music. In addition, students are awarded points in three communication events: public speaking, personal interview, and written essay. This year's overall curriculum theme is: "Russia."
The competition also features an event called "Super Quiz." This is a game show formatted event where students who are quickest to hit the buzzer and provide the correct answer receive points for the team. Super Quiz is the most highly anticipated competition of the event and will be held on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 p.m. This year the competition's format has changed for Super Quiz. The event will now showcase information from the entire curriculum, rather than focusing on a specific topic.
The highest-scoring team in this year's competition will represent Georgia in the national championship. The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) Nationals will be held April 25-27, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
