Harbin Cancer Center raises more than $8,200 for Cancer Navigators

 

(Media Release) The halls of the Harbin Clinic Tony E. Warren, MD Cancer Center were decked out during the holidays with designer wreaths. The annual Masterpiece Wreath Auction and Sale benefited Cancer Navigators, a local nonprofit that helps cancer patients on their journey. That event, as well as part of the proceeds from the Early Bird Cancer Walk in November, meant the nonprofit got a special Christmas gift in the form of an $8,230 donation from the cancer center.

         Area florists, garden clubs, businesses, interior designers, nonprofits, cancer survivors and individuals participated in creating one-of -a-kind wreaths. The festive wreaths lined the walls of the Cancer Center for most of November.

       "This event kicked off the holiday season with a huge showcase of wreaths that were truly masterpieces and helped raise much-needed funds as well as awareness for Cancer Navigators," said Charlotte Atkins, executive director. "The Cancer Center, its staffers and oncologists are dedicated to providing top-notch care to patients and this event shows that care extends beyond the medical treatment they provide."

        The wreath auction featured 66 original wreaths. In addition, this year's event included dozens of other wreaths and tabletop décor items for sale. The public was invited to vote for their auction favorite.  Votes were $1 each and the wreath with the most votes received the People's Choice Award. This year's winner was the Thistle Garden Club.       

       Here are the top vote-getters in other categories, according to the Cancer Center:

People's Choice and Garden Club Category Winner  – Thistle Garden Club; Garden Club – Camellia Garden Club; Decorator's Category – Julie Swann; Florist Category – Flowers by Joan;  Business Category – (A tie)  Traditions of Rome and Southern Interiors; Individual Category – Alethea Temple.

         Janice Hopkins, director of the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center, said "The physicians and staff at the Harbin Clinic Tony E . Warren Cancer Center are pleased to provide our support to Cancer Navigators Inc. and their mission to provide resources for cancer patients and their families."

        Cancer Navigators services includes nurses to help patients understand their diagnosis and treatment and help them navigate the medical system while service navigators connect them to needed resources and provide counseling. All services are free to cancer patients and their families and the nonprofit is totally supported by donations.

      Cancer Navigators' Fourth Annual Holiday Ball fundraiser is still under way, with more than 500  keepsake ornaments having been mailed out. Atkins encourages those who would like to give to do so by the end of the year in order to get the tax deduction for this year.
