Online Math Tutor now available to Floyd County parents

Media release: Every parent can relate to the struggle of helping a child with math problems at home.  Now dads will be able to do more than say, "go ask your mother" and mothers will have a response other than, "go ask your father."  FCS Math Tutor is now available to help your child with math homework.  The resource can also be used by students to help them to be more successful in math.  Math Tutor is an online resource that includes math practice activities, video tutorials, and printable lessons.  The resource is available by clicking on the Math Tutor logo on the homepage of the Floyd County Schools website www.floydboe.net.  Math Tutor has lessons and tutorials broken down by grade level, subject and state standard.  Teachers are also using Math Tutor to support class instruction so children should be able to assist parents in navigating the math resource.

Math Tutor was developed by Jennifer Greer, math common core facilitator for Floyd County Schools, as she worked with math teachers to match instruction in Floyd County classrooms to the new math curriculum that came with the move to Common Core Standards in Georgia.  Common Core Standards were developed by states working together nationwide with the goal of providing consistency in what a student is expected to learn across the country.  "In our work with parents, they told us that a resource tool was needed to make it possible to help their children with math homework or problems," Greer said. "Math Tutor was developed in response to this request from parents."  Ms. Greer has been tracking the use of Math Tutor in the first few months of school and already more than 4,910 visits had been logged on the site.

A communication plan has been developed to make parents aware of the new math resource.  A key component of spreading the word about Math Tutor is teacher parent communication.  Teachers have been provided with communication tools to use in their classroom to home communication.  Information from teachers is consistently the highest rated form of communication from school to home. Teachers and schools have been asked to include the Math Tutor logo and information about the resource in home to school notes, messages and newsletters to make sure parents are familiar with the online assistance.  Parents with questions or suggestions for Math Tutor may contact Jennifer Greer at  jgreer@floydboe.netAll sites linked in Math Tutor are free and do not require a log-in or password.
