Surviving to Share breast cancer stories sought

Media release: Breast cancer survivors are once again invited to share their courageous stories of survival and hope in the seventh annual Surviving to Share contest. This event is annually held in October in recognition of breast cancer awareness month and is sponsored by Redmond Regional Medical Center.

"Redmond Regional Medical Center began this program with the intent to encourage survivors to share their stories of hope and inspiration with others," said Wanda Whitten, Director of Community Relations for Redmond. "Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today. With the help of local sponsors, the hospital can bring a greater awareness of the importance of annual mammograms and monthly self-breast exams and spread hope to others facing cancer."

Survivors are encouraged to submit a story of their journey with breast cancer or the story of the care they were provided from a caregiver. One breast cancer survivor and one caregiver will be selected as winners. Entry forms include the needed information for survivor stories and care giver nominations.

The survivors' stories of hope and inspiration have and will continue to impact the lives of women throughout Northwest Georgia. Breast cancer survivors in Northwest Georgia are encouraged to write their story, including when they were diagnosed, their treatment timeline, support system, how they feel today, and any advice and encouragement they can offer to others facing the same battle. Participants are also asked to submit a candid photo of themselves and their families. The caregiver story winner and the breast cancer survivor winner will receive a gift package from the Rome community. Survivors should only enter one story either for themselves or their caregiver.

The deadline to enter is Sept. 21.Winners will be announced at a banquet at Coosa Country Club on Tuesday, Oct. 23 that will honor all participants. Those who entered their stories last year but were not chosen as one of the winners, are encouraged to enter the contest again this year. Previous winners of Surviving to Share are not eligible to enter their stories again. However, honorable mention winners will qualify to enter again.

Entry forms are available at Redmond Regional, WRGA, Cancer Navigators, Pansy's Boutique and online at www.redmondregional.com . For additional information, contact Wanda Whitten at 706-802-3924 or Andrea Pitts 706-802-3732.
