Media release: Most teens dream of being on the big stage singing at a rock concert. For 17 Floyd County students, that dream will become real when they sing with the classic rock group Foreigner at a concert scheduled for August 31 at Chastain Park Amphitheatre. The high school chorus singers will appear on stage with Foreigner to sing the chorus of the group's 1984 hit "I Want To Know What Love Is" during the outdoor concert.
The Floyd County group entered a contest to appear with Foreigner that was conducted by Rome Radio Partners, LLC, operators of a cluster of seven local radio stations including 104.9 The Rebel. "For high school teens thinking of a career in music, this will give them a wonderful opportunity to see what the business of music is all about behind the scenes," an elated Sherry Childs, system coordinator of fine arts for Floyd County Schools, stated when informed that the group had been selected as the winner of the radio contest.
The high school chorus singers were selected from Armuchee High, Coosa High, Model High and Pepperell High to participate in the chorus audition performance. The group came together with fine arts teachers in Floyd County Schools to develop the winning performance, and in just over two weeks, recorded the audition tape to submit for the contest. The Floyd County Schools Fine Arts Department also won a $500.00 prize to fund arts education programs in schools.
Foreigner has been appearing in concert with local school chorus groups for the last four years to promote music in schools and to raise funds for the Grammy Foundation's efforts aimed at saving music in the country's schools. Students will not only sing but they will also help the band to raise funds for the "Grammy in the Schools" program. Foreigner has sold over 70 million albums in the band's career that spans more than 30 years in music.
Students participating in the winning group called the "Cold as Ice" Chorus are: Charis Richey, junior; Shelby Ballard, senior; Rachael Minard, sophomore; Mason Dillard, junior; and Austin Adams a senior from Armuchee High School; Mikayla Gentry a sophomore at Coosa High School; Cardie McClure, senior and Landon Johnson, a sophomore at Model High School; and Miranda McGee, senior; Savannah Crabbe, junior; Morgan Worsham, senior; Katie Pittman, senior; Alicia Johnston, sophomore; Haven Kandasammy, junior; Michael Payne, junior; Joey Purser, junior and Matthew Dempsey, a senior at Pepperell High School. Fine Arts instructors and others involved in the production were: Kam Malone, Pepperell High, director; Sherry Childs, Fine Arts coordinator, producer; Lacey Pinson, Model High, choreography; Kelly Mountain, Model Elementary, piano; Tim Burton, Model High, bass; Rodney Tyler, drummer; and Tim Hensley, central office, video camera and editing.
