Media release: Armuchee prep hardwood standout Marcel Hudson has committed to join the Georgia Northwestern Bobcats Men's Basketball program in 2012-13.
Hudson's Indian crew from Armuchee went 15-12 his senior season with the high school forward leading the way with 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals per game.
"He played down low quite a bit more than he will for us," said Georgia Northwestern Head Men's Basketball Coach David Stephenson. "He brings a great skill set and head for the game."
As if he were applying for his first job after college, this 6-foot, 180-pound incoming freshman brings quite a resume and valuable references into summer workouts with GNTC. "He can flat out play," said Bobcat co-captain Fernando Limus, Jr. at Hudson's letter signing. "Signing guys like Marcel is going to make us really strong in the right places."
Limus, Jr., second in career scoring at Model High School (GA), is the anticipated starting point guard for the Bobcats this upcoming season. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound guard from Rome, Georgia returns to the Georgia Northwestern roster this fall after a knee injury on the road sidelined him early in the 2011-12 campaign.
Alongside, Limus, Jr., Hudson will almost assuredly see some time on the hardwood this season for the NJCAA Region XVII program. "He's a really good kid that fits into whatever mold you shape for him on the court," said Armuchee High School Head Boy's Basketball Coach Ray Tucker. "Marcel played big for us all over the court. He's part of a resilient class of seniors that could bounce back from anything."
"I'm really excited about the chance to go to college," said Hudson. "Basketball is a big part of my life. But my future comes first. So, whatever gets me there, I'm going to give it my all. It just happens that basketball is what's helping me make it all become a reality for me."
Hudson was also a standout on the prep gridiron in North Georgia amassing nearly 500 yards as a wideout for the Indians in 2011. He also played defense and special teams for the GHSA Region 7-AA program.
The new Bobcat will be joined by what is arguably the best recruiting class the young program has had in its six years of intercollegiate competition across the southeast. The two-time TCSGAA conference champions joined NJCAA's Region XVII last season and reached the regional semi-finals in 2012.
Georgia Northwestern will be holding its next open workout on May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Rossville Athletic Complex in Rossville, Georgia. A current sports physical and waiver signature is all that is required to take part. Tryouts will begin after the fall semester begins at GNTC.
