Media release: Bennett Garland, a junior at Armuchee High School, has won a national essay contest sponsored by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. The essay topic Garland addressed in his essay was: discuss the relevance today of Abraham Lincoln's statement, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."
The essay was judged locally, regionally, and nationally for this award from entries all over the United States. Garland has been invited to attend an expense-paid week-long session at the Washington Workshops Congressional Seminar in Washington D.C. The workshop is scheduled for June 16-22 and the seminar attendees will be housed at Marymount College in D. C. Only three students from Georgia were invited to attend.
The week spent at the Washington Workshops provides an opportunity for students from across the country and from many backgrounds to get to know each other and develop an understanding of the operations and purposes of our Government. The week is spent attending lectures by members of Congress and other high ranking government officials. Sessions are planned at the Pentagon, US Department of State, Federal Reserve Board, and the Bureau of Census. Visits are planned to Congressional Committee meetings, House and Senate Galleries, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution and foreign embassies. Speakers include Congressmen, Lobbyists, History and Government Professors from local universities, FBI personnel, Senators, Press secretaries and Political Satirists. Participating students also enjoy tours of Washington during their visit.

Garland has received a number of honors recently. He was selected for the Governor's Honors program this summer in the area of social studies. He was a medal winner on the Armuchee team that won the system Academic Decathlon and placed fourth in the state competition. He was also on the Armuchee team that placed fifth in the 2012 region literary meet.
