Media release: The date has been set for parents to register their children for Kindergarten classes to begin next August in Floyd County Schools.  Parents may take children to their local school for registration and a screening on Thursday, May 10 between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.   A registration packet will be available at each primary and elementary school with a Kindergarten class in Floyd County Schools or online at www.floydboe.net.  A child must be five years-old on or before September 1, 2012 to enroll.  The screening date is for children not currently enrolled in a local Pre-K program.  All children in Pre-K programs will be pre-registered through the Georgia Lottery Pre-K program they attend.
Forms have been sent to all Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K programs and made available to parents through those programs. Students in the Pre-K program have or will be screened for Kindergarten while participating in the school or private daycare Pre-K program.  Children currently attending a Pre-K program will not be required to attend the screening on May 10.
Children not attending a Pre-K program this year will need to attend the screening and registration on Thursday, May 10 from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  No appointment is necessary and parents may stop by the local school at any time during the registration and screening period.  The screening instrument the children will be given asks basic questions related to alphabet, number and shape recognition.  For parents of a child not currently enrolled in a Pre-K program, it is very important to make arrangements to attend the Kindergarten screening on May 10 at the school in your district.
The Kindergarten pre-registration helps the school know how many students to expect in the fall. Participation in the screening also gives parents an opportunity to ask questions concerning what they will need to do before their child begins school in August.
Important Reminders:
- A parent needs to accompany the child to the screening on May 10
- The parent and child must attend the screening in their school district
- You will need to provide the official birth certificate for the child
- The child's social security card or number will be needed to register (optional with a completed waiver)
- Proof of residency will be required.  You may use a current utility bill for this purpose.
Parents should bring immunization and eye/ear/dental screening certificates, but these are not mandatory the day of the pre-registration and screening. These must be completed by the first day of school in the fall.
