Exchange Club Patriotic Events for the week of Nov. 7, 11, 13

November 7th 9:30 am - Placement and display of the 30'x42' Star Spangled Banner flag on the Rome/Floyd County Law Enforcement Center building through November 13th.

November 11th 8:30 am - A special flag raising ceremony on the lawn and steps of City Hall with Milton Tippin and Dr. Bob Williams, the Exchange Clubs most highly decorated veterans raising the city's ceremonial flag.  Short speeches from Exchange Club members: General William Wigley, Bill Fricks, Howie Lowden ( Admiral Towers) and Mayor Evie McNiece addressing the contributions of Rome veterans and what it means to be a veteran. The Rome High School ROTC under the command of Maj. William Boyles will serve as the Honor Guard for the flag raising ceremony.  This will be the initial patriotic function for the beginning of Veterans Day as we honor and pay tribute to all area veterans for their service to the nation. Rome veterans will be sharing what it has meant to them to be in service to our country and their strong sense of duty.  In addition, the community will have an opportunity to learn about one of  its citizens that was the Father of Naval Aviation and the primary proponent of the development of Air Craft Carriers to defend the nation and the sea lanes of the free world.

November 11th noon - November is One Nation Under God month for Exchange clubs across the nation. This year it will be the Americanism Committee's (chaired by Giles Chapman) privilege to offer two (2) programs that give great emphasis to our rich religious heritage and the foundation of freedom of religion that we are allowed to practice throughout the land without fear or intimidation.  Our first program for One Nation Under God will be held at lunch, at the Palladium on the fairgrounds, during the Exchange Club regular meeting.   Dr. David Campbell,  minister of Trinity United Methodist Church, a veteran and U.S. Army Chaplain, that served in Iraq will be our speaker.  The media is invited to attend.

November 13th 7:30 pm - Sunday evening at 7:30 pm the Americanism Committee of the  Exchange Club of Rome will once again bring One Nation Under God to the citizens of Rome and Floyd County as a part of their Covenant of Service which requires them to consecrate their best energies to the the uplifting of social, religious, political and business ideals. One Nation Under God is being offered to the public at no charge and as a responsible community service. The featured speaker will be Major General Douglas L. Carver, Ret. and former Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army. Music for the program will be provided by Ms. Erin Westmaas, Darlington Upper School Choral Director, accompanied by  Ms. Donna Hester. In addition, Mr. Bill King, an Exchange Club of Rome member and Director of New Horizons Band, will present patriotic instrumental selections designed especially for this program.  The program will be conducted in the Rome City Auditorium for the convenience of all citizens and all ages.
