-Georgia Northwestern tobacco-free by Aug. 1: Media release: In the interest of better promoting the health of our staff and students, Georgia Northwestern Technical College campuses will transition to a tobacco-free environment effective Aug. 1. Smoking and use of other tobacco products will not be permitted on any college campus to include but not limited to, campus buildings, sidewalks, parking lots, building entrances and common areas, and in college-owned vehicles. Smoking or the use of any type of tobacco product is only permitted within private vehicles. "GNTC has decided to be a tobacco-free campus because we want to provide a healthy environment for our students and staff," said Dr. Craig McDaniel, president.

-Greater Rome home sales down in April vs. year ago -- but market remains active: Local Realtors sold 41 homes last month, down more than 40 percent from April 2010 reports. Also down: the average cost of homes sold. The average home sold last month was valued at $99,329 vs. $137,874. That shows up even more as the total value of homes sold dropped from $9.2 million in April 2010 to just below $4.1 million last month.

-One factor is the lack of a tax credit this year, says Debbie Hayes, president of the Greater Rome Board of Realtors who's with Hardy Realty. Federal and state breaks were available throughout much of the first half of 2010.

-So what's ahead? "The good news is people are still buying -- we are showing again. The phones are ringing; contracts are being accepted," Hayes says. And this caveat: "You can actually buy more home for less money today than you could last April."
