Floyd sheriff's office welcomes new CHAMPs instructor/deputy

(Media release) The Floyd County Sheriff's Office welcomes Dep. Irene Bell as our 2010 C.H.A.M.P.S. Instructor. The C.H.A.M.P.S. acronym stands for Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety. This program is offered through the Sheriff's Office and targets Floyd County middle school seventh graders. Seventh graders will learn the dangers of using drugs and how to stay safe. The C.H.A.M.P.S. Program satisfies both needs.

During the course of this program, we discuss things like: tobacco, alcohol, home alone/child abduction safety, A.T.V. safety, marijuana, and methamphetamines. These are just a few issues that our Seventh graders will encounter as they get older. Dep. Bell will visit every county middle school at least once a month throughout the school year. These schools includes: Armuchee, Coosa, Darlington, Georgia School for the Deaf, Model and Pepperell.

There is a pre and post test given to see how much the students know already and it measures how much information was retained throughout the year. The test scores usually increase by sixty percent by the end of the year. This shows how effective and important this program is to the youth of Floyd County. Dep. Bell is a certified Deputy and is also certified as a C.H.A.M.P.S. Instructor. Please join us as we support Dep. Bell in her endeavor to educate, encourage and teach our youth.
