As East Rome Wal-Mart 'reopens,' a look at what could have been. Plus: Business, political updates. 60% rain chance.

Business spotlight/East Rome & Wal-Mart:

-East Rome Wal-Mart's grand reopening is Friday; as for surrounding development ... : After several months of ongoing upgrades, the East Rome Wal-Mart will celebrate its grand reopening Friday morning off U.S. 411 and Callier Springs Road. The 100,000-plus-square-foot store opened in April 2004; it recently became the third local store--behind West Rome and Cartersville--to get a new look. Some 2,500 of Wal-Marts' 3,600 stores are being updated by 2012.

-What business boom? Perhaps tje bigger news is what hasn't happened since Wal-Mart opened in East Rome. The three other corners of the Callier/411 intersection have been considered for development. An Atlanta-area company had plans for the church site while several signs advertising future growth have gone up --and down -- on the other side of Callier. The church has returned to its former home.

-Big plans fizzle: On the Wal-Mart side, the big player was to be Seven Hills Town Center, complete with 500,000 square feet of retail including an unnamed grocer and a few big-box stores. Today, 15 acres of that site are on the market under the name Calliers Crossing. Just up 411, the Evans' family continues to turn dirt across from Tractor Supply.

-What's new since Wal-Mart: Tractor Supply and the strip center backing up to Floyd Memory Gardens are the only sites to see growth since the megastore's opening. Two of the six strip center sites are vacant.
